The NANO-ACADEMIA 2008 AWARD was given to Dr. Suong V. Hoa. Mr Hoa is Director of the Research Centre on Composites at Concordia University and he and his team work in close collaboration with many Montreal industrial and academnic entities. This comes after he was granted the prestigious Synergy Award from NSERC for his work with Bell Helicopter in October 2006. The prize relates, among other things, to Dr. Hoa's work in incorporating nanoparticles in resins, including: 1. The mixing of nanoclay in epoxies that can augment the fracture toughness of epoxy by more than 5 times. It also enhances the resistance of the epoxy against flammability and water absorption; 2. The mixing of carbon nanotubes in epoxy to augment the electrical conductivity of the composites (CRIAQ 1-14 project); 3. The development of self healing materials. This involves the incorporation of capsules that contain reactive monomers. |
