A thematic call on artificial intelligence is open to support SME projects – in collaboration with major contractors – that address specific issues and opportunities created by the arrival of AI in their different sectors of activity.

Details of the call for projects

This call is made possible thanks to the funds provided under measure 3.2 of the Government of Quebec’s 2019-2020 budget plan on accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence.


  • Demonstrate technology in a representative environment;
  • Increase SME leadership on innovation projects;
  • Integrate SMEs into the innovation network.

Eligible organisms:

SMEs, OEMs and research organizations from QuébecInnove in all sectors of activity, with an establishment operating in Québec, are eligible.

Eligible projects :

  • The project must at least contain one student internship per year for the transfer of knowledge to the SME;
  • Project expenditures in an OEM may not exceed 20% of the project value.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Duration of projects: 3 years
  • Level of technological maturity: (NMT) TRL 6 completed at the end of the project
  • Project must be managed by a small or medium enterprise (SME)
  • Minimum of two (2) industry partners (including SMEs)
  • Minimum of one (1) educational or research institution
  • The selected research projects should be oriented towards SMEs (economy, employment).

Funding support:

  • Maximum grant equivalent to $150,000 per eligible partner company;
  • Maximum grant of $750,000 per project.

Project submission and approval process

The CRIAQ team supports project teams throughout the development of project proposals. It is essential to include a CRIAQ project manager as soon as possible in discussions to ensure that projects are eligible for funding programs. The CRIAQ team will also be able to advise project leaders on the project’s funding structure.

The project approval process is as follows:

  • Evaluation and recommendation by the CRIAQ Scientific Committee
  • Approval by the Board of Directors (if required);
  • Submission to the Ministry of Economy and Innovation (MEI) for final approval.
